Different Types of Hearing Tests

different-types-of-hearing-tests A person suffering from hearing loss might be partially or totally deaf since birth or due to an accident. PVC Family Practice, your family clinic in Garland, Texas, can be your go-to clinic if you’re looking forward to a hearing test.

Your primary care doctor/clinic might recommend one of these types of hearing tests:

  • Pure Tone Testing
This test measures the lowest volume a person can hear by playing a sound from a pair of headphones, and the participant would say “yes” after hearing a beep.
  • Bone Conduction Testing
This type of test determines the type of hearing loss a person is suffering from by placing a conductor behind the ear which will transmit vibrations to the inner ear.
  • Tympanometry
Using a device called “tympanogram”, a clinical doctor will observe the movement of your eardrums. A stiff and intolerable movement is an indicator of ear infection, earwax build-up, and rupture of the eardrums.
  • Acoustic Reflex Testing
This test determines if a person is suffering from hearing loss by observing a muscle that tightens in the inner ear whenever exposed to blaring noises. Severe hearing loss elicits lower responsiveness.
  • Auditory Brainstem Response
This test is intended for individuals, especially children, who cannot participate in other hearing tests. Electrodes are attached to the head and to a computer while listening to the sounds from the headphones to examine the activities of cochlea and brain pathways.

It’s important to undergo a hearing test during the early onset of your hearing loss in our healthcare facility to determine what type and how severe your hearing loss is, so we can recommend the necessary intervention for you.
